Innovating Indonesian Cultural Studies Panel

Dr Jess Kruk

Lecturer, School of Social Sciences, Asian Studies at the University of Western Australia

Dr Jess Kruk is a sociolinguist and lecturer in Indonesian Studies at The University of Western Australia. Her research focuses on identifying and addressing the exclusion of marginalised people from social, economic, and cultural life in the Asia Pacific.

Her current projects include an investigation of the languages and identities of ethnic Chinese minorities in Indonesia, an exploration of how extreme metal musicians in the Asia Pacific write metal lyrics using non-English languages, reimagining, and reinvigorating Indonesian language teaching and enhancing language communication to fight prejudice in the general public.

Liam Prince

Consortium Director, Australian Consortium for 'In-Country' Indonesian Studies (ACICIS)

As Consortium Director, Liam provides executive leadership of ACICIS and is responsible for all aspects of the consortium's operations— both in Australia and Indonesia. Liam is an energetic advocate for ACICIS and its mission to increase the number of Australian university students undertaking study at Indonesian institutions of higher learning.

As the Director of ACICIS, Liam is frequently called upon to make the case for greater bilateral educational exchange between Australia and Indonesia to a diverse audience of Australian and Indonesian governments, businesee representatives, higher education administrators, and the general publics of both countries.

Listiana Operananta

Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia to Western Australia

Listiana Operananta joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1997 after pursuing a career in several Indonesian medias. Born in Bandung, Listiana completed her undergraduate studies in International Relations at Parahyangan University in 1994. While serving in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she earned her master's degree in Political Science from University of Indonesia in 2000.

Prior to her current position as Consul General of Indonesia in Western Australia, Listiana was the Director for Information and Media at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Listiana Operananta was previously assigned at the Indonesian Embassy in London and in Wellington, responsible for economic affairs, as well as information and social cultural affairs.

Expanding Educational Horizons: The Emergence of Australian Universities in Indonesia

Han Xiao Zhang

Counsellor (Education and Research), Australian Embassy Jakarta

Han has diverse experience across government and the private sector. At the Department of Education, Skills and Employment, Han has worked across legislation, policy and economic roles in Higher Education, Schools and Early Childhood Education.

Prior to his appointment, Han was the director of an economics and research team in Higher Education where he was instrumental in shaping the Job-ready Graduates reforms. Han has also facilitated amendments to the main legislation relating to school education and led the reform of the national approach to early childhood education and care quality standards.

Prof Stephen Cairns

Professor, Urban Design Indonesia, Monash University Indonesia

Professor Stephen Cairns is an urban designer, writer, teacher and current member of the Executive team at Monash University Indonesia. Stephen's research is focused on architecture, design and urban planning, and takes theoretical and practical forms. He also works to support Monash University's global network, as it aims to drive innovation and address critical educational challenges through impactful partnerships and collaborative efforts such as the Banten Mosaic Living Lab.

Stephen also serves as Titular Professor at ETH Zurich, and leads the Agropolitan Territories research group at Future Cities Lab (FCL) in Singapore. He has held visiting professorships at the Graduate School of Design (GSH) Harvard University and National University of Singapore.

Barriers and Bridges: Fostering International Research Collaborations

Prof Krishna Sen

Emeritus Professor, School of Social Sciences, University of Western Australia

Professor Krishna Sen is a Professor in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Western Australia, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. Prior to her appointment as Dean, she was the Executive Director for Humanities and Creative Arts at the Australian Research Council (ARC) in Canberra. She has been a member of the ARC's Asia Pacific Futures network and the Cultural Research network. In 2014, Krishna was appointed to the Reference Group of the New Colombo Plan under Minister Julie Bishop. She is also a member of the Hawke Research Institute Advisory Board.

She has acted as a consultant to major international agencies on Human Rights in Indonesia. Krishna was a founding member of Murdoch University's Asia Research Centre and served on its international advisory board for many years.

Marlene Millott

Program Manager, Australia-Indonesia Centre

Marlene is the Program Manager at the Australia-Indonesia Centre (AIC), leading the Partnership for Australia-Indonesia Research (PAIR). In her role, she oversees the research process including project consultation and design, implementation and advocacy, working closely with an increadible AIC team and stakeholders in Australia and Indonesia to deliver policy recommendations for governments based on evidence from research. PAIR's research topics include health, youth skills development, social inclusion, agriculture, transportation and infrastructure.

Marlene is also on the Victorian Committee for the Australia-Indonesia Business Council, where she works with leaders in industry and government to connect the business and trade community with opportunities to support their activity in the bilateral relationship.

Dr Ian Wilson

Senior Lecturer, School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Murdoch University

Dr Ian Wilson is a political sociologist with over 25 years of experience researching Indonesian politics and society. A longstanding area of research interest has been the relationship between power, violence and representation, that Ian has pursued through two major interrelated research agendas; his ethnographic work on Indonesian local thugs called preman and its networks and relations to the capital and state; and politics of poverty in Southeast Asia through the lense of unequal social relation in which the poor are dependent upon the more powerful for basic needs.

Ian also has a research interest in tensions between popular participation in electoral democracy and anti-democratic currents within Indonesia's political and economic elites.
